This project is an initiative by the Mayor of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) to support schools to take pupils to heritage sites across the region. Cambridgeshire County Council is managing the project on behalf of CPCA.
A message from Mayor Paul Bristow
“I grew up in the Fens and I’m so proud to represent my home county as Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Supporting children and young people to learn about the place they live matters deeply to me. That’s why I’m delighted to launch a new fund, backed by UKSPF funding, to help students visit some of our fantastic local heritage sites.”
“The Mayor's Day Out will help cover the cost of travel and entry fees to high-quality visitor attractions across our county. Our aim is to spark curiosity about Cambridgeshire through fun and inspiring experiences that celebrate our cultural and natural heritage. From the Fens to the cities of Peterborough and Cambridge, young people will have the chance to step outside the classroom and connect with the places that help shape who they are.”
“I invite your school to be part of this journey. Apply for funding support and help inspire the next generation.”
The pilot project in March 2026 involves a specific number of destinations and is open to schools across all phases including 6th forms to apply for assistance towards the travel and entry costs of visits.

About the Programme
Aim
To support more school visits to heritage destinations, by providing financial help towards travel and entry costs.
- At least 100 group visits will be funded through this programme.
- Visits must take place before the end of March 2026.
How it works
We have partnered with heritage venues that offer established education visit programmes. These venues have shared key information to support school trip planning, including:
- Suggested dates and timings
- Booking details
- Group size guidance
- Health and safety information in line with national standards
- All destination details and summaries are available in an online prospectus below.
Benefits for schools
Funding is available to support travel and entry costs, making it easier for schools to access enriching experiences across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The programme offers flexible options for different key stages, group sizes and visit lengths, with opportunities for both local trips and visits further afield. In addition to exploring the area’s rich history and culture, some venues also provide secondary students with valuable insights into career opportunities within the heritage sector. This funding is for new trips only. It cannot be used for visits that are already planned or booked by your school/setting.
