Mayor's Day Out

The 25-26 Academic Year Mayor's Day Out Project is now closed for applications.

This project is an initiative by the Mayor of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) to support schools to take pupils to heritage sites across the region. Cambridgeshire County Council is managing the project on behalf of CPCA.

A message from Mayor Paul Bristow

“I grew up in the Fens and I’m so proud to represent my home county as Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Supporting children and young people to learn about the place they live matters deeply to me. That’s why I’m delighted to launch a new fund, backed by UKSPF funding, to help students visit some of our fantastic local heritage sites.”

“The Mayor's Day Out will help cover the cost of travel and entry fees to high-quality visitor attractions across our county. Our aim is to spark curiosity about Cambridgeshire through fun and inspiring experiences that celebrate our cultural and natural heritage. From the Fens to the cities of Peterborough and Cambridge, young people will have the chance to step outside the classroom and connect with the places that help shape who they are.”

“I invite your school to be part of this journey. Apply for funding support and help inspire the next generation.”

The pilot project in March 2026 involves a specific number of destinations and is open to schools across all phases including 6th forms to apply for assistance towards the travel and entry costs of visits.

For more information about how to apply please contact cm@cambridgeshire.gov.uk.

About the Programme

Aim

To support more school visits to heritage destinations, by providing financial help towards travel and entry costs.

- At least 100 group visits will be funded through this programme.
- Visits must take place before the end of March 2026.

How it works

We have partnered with heritage venues that offer established education visit programmes. These venues have shared key information to support school trip planning, including:

- Suggested dates and timings
- Booking details
- Group size guidance
- Health and safety information in line with national standards
- All destination details and summaries are available in an online prospectus below.

Benefits for schools

Funding is available to support travel and entry costs, making it easier for schools to access enriching experiences across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The programme offers flexible options for different key stages, group sizes and visit lengths, with opportunities for both local trips and visits further afield. In addition to exploring the area’s rich history and culture, some venues also provide secondary students with valuable insights into career opportunities within the heritage sector. This funding is for new trips only. It cannot be used for visits that are already planned or booked by your school/setting.

Therapy Provisions we offer

The healing power of music

The healing power of music

Music therapy at Cambridgeshire Music launched in 1995 and today we run one of the largest teams of music therapists in the country. Specialist music therapists work in special schools, mainstream schools, units attached to schools and children’s centres across Cambridgeshire, and we see hundreds of people a year.

Music therapy sessions are person-centred and focus on communication using sound – made on instruments and with the voice. Non-linguistic communication is often helpful for those with limited verbal expression, mental health issues, emotional, social and behavioural problems or those with dementia or other degenerative conditions. Sessions can be for groups or for individuals.

Our therapists work with parents, carers and professionals to share skills, support consistency and follow-up outside sessions. We also provide consultations and support for school engagement and mental health issues in schools.

Five interesting facts about music therapy
1. Music therapy originated in World Wars I, when local musicians played for veterans in hospitals with very positive results.

2. People of all ages can benefit from music therapy. It works by stimulating parts of the brain responsible for physical and mental functions.

3. Music Therapy is very useful when verbal skills are limited due to physical or learning disability, or where clients are unable to make use of a verbal therapy due to emotional distress.

4. You don’t need to be musical or play an instrument to benefit.

5. Music Therapy takes place across the globe – The World Federation of Music Therapy is the international organisation for music therapy and the British Association of Music Therapy is the British organisation for music therapists.

The healing power of drama

The healing power of drama

Dramatherapy at Cambridgeshire Music started in 2018 and has quickly become an essential part of our service. Our drama therapists currently work in SEN and mainstream schools across Cambridgeshire.

Dramatherapy sessions are person-centred and focus on communication through dramatic techniques such as role play, story-telling and embodiment. It is particularly helpful for those with some verbal and physical ability who have emotional or behavioural difficulties, trauma, anxiety, or additional mental health needs. It is suitable for individuals or groups – of all ages and abilities.

Five interesting facts about Drama Therapy
1. Psychodrama as an action-based form of psychoanalysis.

2. Drama as a healing force has ancient roots in the healing rituals and dramas of various societies.

3. People of all ages can benefit from drama therapy.

4. Dramatherapy is often used when emotional trauma is too significant and difficult to manage head on.

5. You don’t need to have any experience or knowledge of drama or acting to take part and benefit.
